These sessions aim to assist parents of lower primary school students (Infant I to Standard 2) to find ways to cope with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Definitions are addressed. Focus is on personal development of parents to increase awareness and understanding of themselves. There is also social support in helping the parent to identify the specific needs of the young, school-aged child. Lastly, parents are reminded of existing resources to access support and help.

COPING THROUGH A CRISIS UPPER SCHOOL

Parents need to manage their own stress to be able to sustain the emotional support of their children. This session aims to provide information to support and strengthen the coping strategies of the parents of children in upper primary school (Standards three, four and five). An initial definition of coping strategies is provided. Types of coping strategies are introduced as well as specific activities to reduce stress. When some of these activities are incorporated in their daily routines parents will be better able tolerate and surmount the stress and uncertainties related to the pandemic.
